Event Info

Citizens‘ engagement is a key prerequisite for successful implementation of global, regional, national and local climate neutrality goals. The European Climate Pact (which has been launched in December 2020) is a ground-breaking public sector innovation that aims to create an ecosystem and engagement opportunities for citizens and other non-state actors to make individual climate action pledges and thus to contribute in an action and impact oriented manner their passion, knowledge as well as other resources to the climate neutrality goals of the European Green Deal.

Fascinated by the innovation leadership of the European Climate Pact and convinced of its huge potentials for inspiring innovative approaches for the empowerment of non-state actors’ climate action on a global level, Miroslav Polzer, one of the first-generation EU Climate Pact ambassadors, initiated this European Climate Pact launch satellite event with a focus on Youth Climate Action Empowerment. The aim is to build bridges between the European Climate Pact and global youth/multi-stakeholder Climate Action Empowerment efforts in the context of the United Nations system and to connect digital innovation solution providers with the climate action community to develop concrete climate action apps & tools. (See reference: IAAI GloCha & Climate Chain Coalition ICLEI Daring Cities Forum 2020 side event „With Blockchain Technology and Digital Innovation Towards Climate Neutral Cities and Citizens“ (see video: https://youtu.be/gkrE35IlLO4)). Celebration of the Third Anniversary of the Climate Chain Coalition with the Virtual Event „Building the Digital Infrastructure for Climate Action Empowerment“ 11 December 2020, 3-5 PM CET

CCC Online Event in Celebration of :

5th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Paris Agreement

3rd Anniversary of the Climate Chain Coalition

1st Anniversary of the Digital Innovation Community

And for Charting the Road Ahead

Date: Friday, 11 December 2020, 3-5 PM CET

Virtual event platform: Streamyard with live webcast on youtube and facebook

Rationale and goals of the event

On 12th of December 2015 leaders of the countries of the world agreed at the United Nations Climate Change conference COP21 in Paris to strengthen the global collaborative response to the threat of climate change and to keep the global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and if possible, below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

5 years have passed since then and very much still needs to be done in order to get all of society engaged in a meaningful and rewarding manner in climate action.

An important enabler of climate action are emerging technologies, like e.g. blockchain technology, internet of things and artificial intelligence. 12th of December 2020 it will be the third anniversary of the inaugural meeting of the Climate Chain Coalition www.climatechaincoalition.io which has been set up in cooperation with the UN Climate Change secretariat (https://unfccc.int/news/un-supports-blockchain-technology-for-climate-action) with the aim to facilitate coordination, communication and collaboration of all relevant stakeholders in the field of blockchain technology deployment for enhanced multi-stakeholder climate action.

With this online event we are going to assess the status quo, the accomplishments and future challenges in building the data and digital innovation infrastructure for multi-stakeholder climate action and to envisage options for CCC to best contribute to scaled-up and effective use of digital innovation for enhanced climate action.

The thematic introductions of the first part of the virtual event will be concluded by a presentation of the Action for Climate Empowerment initiative ACEAT (a partnership initiative of the UN Climate Change secretariat, the Austrian Federal Ministry for climate action, ICLEI and CCC member IAAI) and its data and digital innovation infrastructure dimension.

In the second part of the event, CCC members (especially CCC team leaders) and CCC partners will provide insights in their work and plans, like eg. in the field of digital finance, climate action tracking and accounting, regional cooperation in Latin America and East Asia etc. and engage in collaborative planning of the work of the Climate Chain Coalition in the year 2021 and beyond.

About the event:

We are living in turbulent times. On the one hand the COVID19 pandemic has shaken our societies and economies and scientists predict that the potential of climate change to disrupt our societal and economic structures is even bigger. On the other hand new thinking and digital innovation enable new forms of local and global cooperation for the public good in times of uncertain futures.

One such story of new thinking and digital-innovation empowered global multi-stakeholder collaboration, is the initiative GloCha, with GloCha standing for Global Challenges as the common denominator of all human beings and future generations being bound together in a community of destiny that is on its way towards more sustainable, just and future proof societal organization with culture, technology and organization, initiated by the United Nations accredited civil society organization IAAI, based in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee in Austria.

TEDxGloCha is using the momentum of the global launch of the TED Countdown initiative for mass mobilization for climate action (https://countdown.ted.com) to present – in line with the TED slogan: “Ideas worth Spreading” – GloCha as the new transformative and inspiring story and collaboration framework, that is going to empower citizens, youth and communities to take meaningful and rewarding climate action, achieving climate neutral lifestyles (= a #GoodLife) and thus giving hope for the future.

IAAI GloCha Side event to the Daring Cities Forum 2020: With blockchain technology and digital innovation towards climate neutral cities and citizens

Date: Thursday, 22 October
Time: 6:00-7:30 PM (Paris/Bonn time)

https://daringcities.org/program/with-blockchain-technology-and-digital-innovation-towards-climate-neutral-cities-and-citizens/

Event description and outcomes

The science is clear: we are in a climate crisis and a swift and deep transformation to low and zero carbon societies is urgently needed – a transition that has for cities many co-benefits in terms of resilience, quality of life, health, cohesion etc. To achieve the goal of climate neutrality, many cities have declared climate neutrality goals, but too often such goals don’t translate into political support and action of all relevant stakeholders and impact on the necessary scale. With this digital innovation workshop, the organizers – IAAI GloCha www.glocha.info in cooperation with the Climate Chain Coalition www.climatechaincoalition.io, the leading global expert network on blockchain technology for climate action – convey the message that blockchain technology and digital innovation can be key enablers of programs towards climate neutral cities with fully engaged citizens (background info: https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/index.php?page=view&type=20000&nr=7095&menu=2993). Speakers will showcase digital innovation tools in the fields of data collection, citizen science, resource mobilization (digital municipal bonds) and gamification.

Based on the interactive discussion in the workshop we plan to outline a cooperation strategy between IAAI GloCha, the Climate Chain Coalition, ICLEI, daring cities and other climate action innovation champions (like youth networks) with concrete pilot projects and resource mobilization plans.

On 26th of June 1945 – exactly 75 years ago – representatives of national governments signed the UN Charter. The world has changed significantly since then. The nature of global challenges has changed and people all over the world more than ever before feel united in a community of destiny challenged i.a. by the climate change crisis and the health crisis caused by COVID19.

The organizers of the “#AllOfSociety #DigitalCooperation for #GlobalGoals” webinar want to use the momentum of the #UN75 celebration and the recent presentation of the “Roadmap for Digital Cooperation” and the “UN Data Strategy for Action by Everyone, Everywhere” by the UN Secretary General to envision new – digitally empowered futures for the United Nations system in which all of society and especially youth and local communities will be engaged in a meaningful and rewarding manner.

For this future oriented discussion, we have organized this webinar to create a virtual forum to collaboratively reflect on the current operating system of global community and to explore new avenues for the enhanced mobilization of action and resources of non-state actors for better delivery of public good on local and global level, guided by the Sustainable Development Goals/Agenda2030.
