The event title provides a thematic framework: The Storm, the Haven and the Angel (themes that are also guiding the DigitalArt4Climate art competition). The Storm: uncertainties and fears in a rapidly changing world. The Haven: people/communities joining hands towards mastering the climate crisis and The Angel: the individual global citizen as the centre of a value and cultural shift towards empathy, solidarity, who creates with his/her individual climate action legacy (documented/certified with digital badges) the foundation for a good life for all.

About the Action for Climate Empowerment Innovation Project ACE_AT:

Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) is a term adopted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to denote work under Article 6 of the Convention (1992) and Article 12 of the Paris Agreement (2015). The over-arching goal of ACE is to empower all members of society to engage in climate action, through education, training, public awareness, public participation, public access to information, and international cooperation on these issues. (source: https://unfccc.int/topics/education-youth/the-big-picture/what-is-action-for-climate-empowerment)

The Project ACE_AT is a collaborative global effort towards strengthening Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) within and beyond the UNFCCC process. The goal is to empower all members of society to engage in Climate Action and to change the perception on ACE.

DigitalArt4Climate Designathon

DigitalArt4Climate is a multi-stakeholder partnership initiative which uses blockchain technology (non-fungible tokens/NFTs) to turn artwork into digital assets, which can be collected and traded, thus opening up a socio- technological innovation space which helps to unlock unprecedented potentials for resource mobilization in support of Sustainable Development Goals/ UN Agenda2030 implementation in general and Action for Climate Empowermentin particular.

Why a Designathon?

In order to design the initiative’s front-end solutions in a time efficient and attractive manner, the DigitalArt4Climate consortium decided to invite the „crowd“ of designers, software and game developers to help design – under the guidance of the DigitalArt4Climate Lead Technology Partner Unique Network NFT Platform, which provides the blockchain based back-end of the DigitalArt4Climate digital collectibles/NFTs solution and the Lead Creative Community partner of the DigitalArt4Climate initiative, Exquisite Workers – the user experience (UX)/user interface (UI) of the DigitalArt4Climate platform and app as well as easy to use software solutions for participating artists, collectors, the climate action community and the general public.

What: Crowdsourcing of design and software solutions for a digital collectibles /NFTs platform and app in the context of the all of society climate action empowerment initiative #DigitalArt4Climate, which is using blockchain technology based digital collectibles (non-fungible tokens/NFTs), to document, tokenize, trade and gamify contributions to local and global climate action empowerment in the context and in support of the Action for Climate Empowerment program of the United Nations  (links to further information: https://www.glocha.org/digitalart4climate/ & Video on demand of the first presentation of the initiative 4th of June 2021 in the context of the World Environment Day 2021: https://youtu.be/SsgTJqfeByI?t=3262)

Aims of the Designathon:

(1) Finding UX/UI (User experience/User interface) design solutions (the “look and feel”) for (a) a digital art collectibles/NFTs platform and app for artists, collectors, the public and (b) a #DigitalArt4Climate marketplace for digital art collectibles/NFTs trading, which is envisaged as some kind of foundation for a future Action for Climate Empowerment resource mobilization marketplace on which different types of contributions to local and global climate action empowerment (art, ideas, funding, volunteering, etc.) as well as verified climate action outcomes/impact will be presented and traded as unique digital collectibles/NFTs, thus enabling new forms of innovative climate related social entrepreneurship

(2) Development of Front-end software solutions for the DigitalArt4Climate initiative, built on the backend of the technical ecosystem of the Unique network NFT platform for the Polkadot and Kusama proof-of-stake blockchain ecosystem (Tech details: https://unique-network.readthedocs.io/en/latest/

(3) forming a community of design and software solutions providers, who will work with the #DigitalArt4Climate consortium on implementation of the identified solutions and designs

Who(Organizer)The designathon is being organized by the Austria based UN accredited civil society organization International Association for the Advancement of Innovative Approaches to Global Challenges IAAI GloCha in partnership with the UN Habitat Youth Programme (=Lead UN Partner of the initiative), Unique Network NFT Platform (Tech Partner), Exquisite Workers (Creative Community Partner), Hubzine Italy, Palette69/Boolien (UX/UI Design partner) and Social Alpha Foundation.
Who(Participants)UX UI designer, web designer, digital market place designersindividuals and teams

In cooperation with

The Challenge:

Paris Agreement implementation – a climate safe future – requires all of society engagement in climate action.

The UNFCCC Action for Climate Empowerment programme ACE is the governance innovation space for national governments and non-party stakeholders to find pathways towards all of society climate action empowerment. A key issue is lack of resources (reference: UNFCCC Future of ACE Options document)

The #DigitalArt4Climate / #DigitalCollectibles4Climate initiative recognises the value of artistic expressions (ideas/text, images, videos, music, …) as enabling resources for climate action. By means of transforming conventional art with the help of technology (enabled by blockchain technology) into digital assets (digital collectibles, non-fungible tokens NFTs) the potentials of art for climate action empowerment can be significantly increased. IAAI, as an associated partner of the Action for Climate Empowerment innovation project ACE_AT and as coordinator of the GloCha Global Challenges Action Empowerment consortium and its partners are planning to establish a mechanism/marketplace for climate related digital art through which auctions and other forms of value exchanges can be organised in order for ACE stakeholders, on all levels of society, to be equipped with the needed financial resources for their work and rewarded for well documented climate action and impact (=ACE marketplace, which has been called for by several stakeholders in the UNFCCC Future of ACE consultations, see above listed UNFCCC reference document).

During the DigitalArt4Climate webinar there will be launched a “Call for visual art for climate action empowerment” as an experiment on systemic Action for Climate Empowerment innovation with the transformative power of art and technology.

Event Info

Citizens‘ engagement is a key prerequisite for successful implementation of global, regional, national and local climate neutrality goals. The European Climate Pact (which has been launched in December 2020) is a ground-breaking public sector innovation that aims to create an ecosystem and engagement opportunities for citizens and other non-state actors to make individual climate action pledges and thus to contribute in an action and impact oriented manner their passion, knowledge as well as other resources to the climate neutrality goals of the European Green Deal.

Fascinated by the innovation leadership of the European Climate Pact and convinced of its huge potentials for inspiring innovative approaches for the empowerment of non-state actors’ climate action on a global level, Miroslav Polzer, one of the first-generation EU Climate Pact ambassadors, initiated this European Climate Pact launch satellite event with a focus on Youth Climate Action Empowerment. The aim is to build bridges between the European Climate Pact and global youth/multi-stakeholder Climate Action Empowerment efforts in the context of the United Nations system and to connect digital innovation solution providers with the climate action community to develop concrete climate action apps & tools. Celebration of the Third Anniversary of the Climate Chain Coalition with the Virtual Event „Building the Digital Infrastructure for Climate Action Empowerment“ 11 December 2020, 3-5 PM CET

CCC Online Event in Celebration of :

5th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Paris Agreement

3rd Anniversary of the Climate Chain Coalition

1st Anniversary of the Digital Innovation Community

And for Charting the Road Ahead

Date: Friday, 11 December 2020, 3-5 PM CET

Virtual event platform: Streamyard with live webcast on youtube and facebook

Rationale and goals of the event

On 12th of December 2015 leaders of the countries of the world agreed at the United Nations Climate Change conference COP21 in Paris to strengthen the global collaborative response to the threat of climate change and to keep the global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and if possible, below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

5 years have passed since then and very much still needs to be done in order to get all of society engaged in a meaningful and rewarding manner in climate action.

An important enabler of climate action are emerging technologies, like e.g. blockchain technology, internet of things and artificial intelligence. 12th of December 2020 it will be the third anniversary of the inaugural meeting of the Climate Chain Coalition www.climatechaincoalition.io which has been set up in cooperation with the UN Climate Change secretariat (https://unfccc.int/news/un-supports-blockchain-technology-for-climate-action) with the aim to facilitate coordination, communication and collaboration of all relevant stakeholders in the field of blockchain technology deployment for enhanced multi-stakeholder climate action.

With this online event we are going to assess the status quo, the accomplishments and future challenges in building the data and digital innovation infrastructure for multi-stakeholder climate action and to envisage options for CCC to best contribute to scaled-up and effective use of digital innovation for enhanced climate action.

The thematic introductions of the first part of the virtual event will be concluded by a presentation of the Action for Climate Empowerment initiative ACEAT (a partnership initiative of the UN Climate Change secretariat, the Austrian Federal Ministry for climate action, ICLEI and CCC member IAAI) and its data and digital innovation infrastructure dimension.

In the second part of the event, CCC members (especially CCC team leaders) and CCC partners will provide insights in their work and plans, like eg. in the field of digital finance, climate action tracking and accounting, regional cooperation in Latin America and East Asia etc. and engage in collaborative planning of the work of the Climate Chain Coalition in the year 2021 and beyond.
